Brazilian news outlet Núcleo, which covers technology's impact on everyday life, announced its return on July 20 after a weeks-long hiatus to rethink its sustainability model. In a statement, the organization said it will focus on investigative journalism, collaboration with other news organizations and building a more engaged community under its new motto, "Journalism for a Human Future."
As part of the shift, Núcleo will stop investing in developing its own technologies as a source of revenue and instead direct its resources toward what it believes generative artificial intelligence cannot replace: high-quality investigative journalism and human connections. It also will expand its coverage to include topics related to technology, AI, climate change, human rights, labor and the concentration of power.
According to Núcleo, direct support from readers will be essential to the project's long-term sustainability. The organization said it will strengthen its membership model by offering new benefits, courses, events and other products for its community.
