The Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and Press (ICLEP) reported that Cuban authorities are carrying out political persecution against journalists Yunia Figueredo and Frank Correa, a freelance reporting couple, and extending the harassment to their daughter. According to ICLEP, on September 4, a local police sector chief in Jaimanitas, a Havana neighborhood, verbally notified Figueredo without a court order that she must report to the police station on the 10th of every month as a precautionary measure in an open proceeding against her for organizing, participating in, and reporting on recent local protests, despite no sentence having been handed down.
The previous day, ICLEP reported, two State Security agents appeared without a warrant at the University of Havana's Faculty of Foreign Languages to inquire about the couple's eldest daughter, Beily Mariam Correa. On that same occasion, authorities warned the journalists to avoid "having contact with the American Embassy" and told Figueredo to "think about her daughters."
According to ICLEP data, the couple has been subjected to at least 22 acts of harassment in little more than a year.
