“Journalism organizations condemned a decision by the Special Criminal Court of the Barra Funda Forum in São Paulo to order the imprisonment under an open regime of journalist Luan Araújo. In October 2022, Araújo was chased at gunpoint by then-federal lawmaker Carla Zambelli.
The prison order was issued by Judge José Fernando Steinberg, who argued that the ‘convicted individual, despite having been duly notified, failed to comply with the financial penalty imposed.’ Araújo, who is unemployed, was required to pay compensation of 2,200 reais (about US$400) following a conviction for ‘defamation.’ He was found guilty for publishing a text critical of Carla Zambelli.

In a statement, the Journalists for Racial Equality Commission of the São Paulo State Journalists’ Union (SJSP, for its Portuguese acronym) and the National Commission of Journalists for Racial Equality of the National Federation of Journalists (Conajira/Fenaj) criticized the punishment imposed on the journalist."
