"ARTICLE 19 reported that independent journalist Ángel Maldonado was the target of an attempted break-in at his home in Ciudad Acuña, [in the Mexican state of] Coahuila on the night of July 13, and called on federal authorities to step up protection measures already in place for him.
According to the statement, at about 11:38 p.m., unidentified individuals threw rocks at the entrance of the home and attempted to force their way inside. After realizing what was happening, the journalist requested assistance from the Municipal Police, State Police and the National Guard. However, by the time officers arrived, the suspected perpetrators had already fled.
[…] The attack occurred just hours after [Maldonado] covered a protest related to an alleged case of child sexual abuse. During the coverage, at around 5 p.m., a relative of the person accused in the case demanded that he stop recording. The journalist informed authorities at the scene that he was carrying out his reporting work.
ARTICLE 19 said the incident is part of a series of previous attacks documented against" Maldonado.
