Latin American press groups launch regional effort against online content removal

“The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Federation of Journalists of Latin America and the Caribbean (FEPALC), and OBSERVACOM have launched ‘Defiende Tu Voz en Internet’ (Stand Up For Your Voice Online, in English), a regional support and guidance service for journalists and media workers affiliated with FEPALC across 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean who face restrictions, content takedowns, account suspensions, or other hits to free speech driven by online platform decisions.

The initiative aims to offer quick and personalized first response to those dealing with post takedowns or restrictions, account suspensions, demonetization, or other enforcement measures under platform rules. It will tackle private censorship stemming from both direct decisions by major tech platforms and abusive reporting by third parties seeking to silence journalists, block news circulation, and undermine press freedom.”
