“Argentina President Javier Milei intensified his attacks against journalism over the past week with a barrage of negative posts posted to social media and in public comments. Reverting to his most aggressive rhetoric, he relied on insults, vulgar references, unverified accusations, and the persistent use of the slogan ‘we don't hate journalists enough.’
A review of his account on the social network X shows he shared 335 posts against the press between Monday, Aug. 17, and Sunday, Aug. 23, wrote 26 original posts, and made 21 derogatory references to journalism across two speeches and an interview conducted between Thursday and Saturday. During that period, he targeted 16 journalists by name and criticized at least nine media companies.
Media organizations targeted in the messages shared by Milei include LA NACION, Clarín, Infobae, Perfil, El Destape, Crónica TV, LN+, TN, and C5N.
During a speech at the Council of the Americas, his criticism of the press was scathing. He referred to ‘corrupt, lying, bribed journalists, hitmen with microphones,’ ‘intellectually deficient beings,’ ‘apes with microphones,’ ‘fools,’ and ‘journalistic trash,’ accusing nearly all media outlets of working ‘to bring down the government.’ ”
