"The murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, which occurred in June 2022 in the Javari Valley in the Amazon, have gained a permanent monitoring platform created to prevent the case from being forgotten and to accelerate the conclusion of the judicial process.
Titled 'Defenders of Javari,' the website gathers information on the investigations, the progress of the criminal case, the protection measures ordered for family members and Indigenous leaders, and the commitments made by the Brazilian state to combat impunity.
The initiative was developed by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in partnership with the Union of Indigenous Peoples of the Javari Valley (Univaja), ARTICLE 19, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OPI), and the Dom Phillips Institute, created by journalist Alessandra Sampaio, the widow of Dom Phillips.
More than preserving the memory of the victims, the platform was designed as a permanent instrument for public monitoring of the case."
