“At least seven Nicaraguan journalists exiled in Costa Rica have been victims of surveillance and threats by agents of the government of husband-and-wife co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, the independent Foundation for Freedom of Expression and Democracy (FLED) said on Wednesday [July 8].
A report titled 'Exile ceases to be a safe haven: Nicaraguan journalists face transnational threats and lack of protection' revealed that several media workers were alerted by Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) about serious risks to their lives and integrity in the country.
FLED, which is part of the regional network Voces del Sur, said it was informed of cases of surveillance, being followed near homes, social media threats, exposure of personal information, intimidation in public spaces, photographs of vehicles, and calls from unknown numbers to at least seven Nicaraguan journalists exiled in Costa Rica.
One of the most serious cases resulted in the emergency departure of a journalist from Costa Rica, after receiving warnings about the danger she faced if she remained in the country.”
