"In the early morning hours of Friday [Sept. 25], an unknown individual broke into the home of journalist César Candia, a correspondent for the media outlets SNT and C9N in the city of Yasy Cañy, Canindeyú department [in Paraguay], and set fire to the journalist's car.

In a conversation with ABC Cardinal on Friday, Candia, who manages the local news outlet Noticias al Día, described the incident as 'a very serious criminal attack against myself, against my family, and against freedom of expression.'

Although the identity of the attacker who set fire to the vehicle remains unknown and the background of the event has not yet been clarified, Candia said he suspects the attack has 'a political tinge' and could be related to publications his news outlet made about Julio Vera Benítez, a municipal councilor and mayoral candidate in Yasy Cañy."
