"On the night of September 17, 2026, Kenny Yucra, journalist and director of the digital news outlet La Lupa, received death threats in the southern Ica region. Via WhatsApp messages from an unknown number, the reporter received two videos showing a firearm simulated to shoot at him. The messages also explicitly referenced his home address and named his 18-month-old son.
Yucra informed the Press and Society Institute (IPYS) that, as part of the outlet's coverage ahead of the October elections, La Lupa has been investigating several regional candidates. In its segment La Lupa Electoral, the outlet reported on Juan Mendoza, candidate for the Regional Government of Ica under the Somos Perú party banner. Mendoza faces a formal prosecutorial complaint for alleged sexual abuse of a minor and suspected ties to local organized crime, all fully documented by the news outlet. Following the report's release, the candidate filed a criminal defamation lawsuit against Yucra, demanding a three-year prison sentence and 100,000 soles [nearly USD $30,000] in civil damages."
