Photojournalist assaulted with metal pipe while documenting Mexico City protest

"On September 12, Abril Ángel—a photographer contributing to Sueña Dignidad and member of the RETA communicators collective and Global Sumud Flotilla Mexico—was physically assaulted alongside at least 100 women activists from the Mercadita Feminista of Alameda Central and Bellas Artes. The attack was carried out with metal pipes by local salespeople from Alameda Central in Mexico City. The incident occurred during a protest, directly in front of Mexico City police officers and personnel from the Mexico City Government Secretariat, who failed to intervene amid the violence.

"About 30 merchants armed with metal pipes arrived and began attacking the activists. Performing her journalistic duties, Abril Ángel started documenting the event. A female merchant subsequently confronted her, demanding that she stop recording. Simultaneously, a man positioned himself behind her and began striking her with a metal pipe.

"Similarly, at least ten other activists were beaten and injured. One activist suffered open wounds requiring sutures, while Ángel sustained injuries to her left shoulder."
