Social media campaign targeted journalist José Rubén Zamora, study finds

"A small group of highly active users, including several prominent public figures in Guatemala, led a structured, organized, and strategically amplified campaign on X against Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora, who has been arbitrarily detained for more than 1,000 days.

This is one of the findings of an independent study analyzing 675,835 posts on X regarding Zamora's case, shared between July 2022 and January 2026 and compiled by academic researcher Harald Waxenecker.

According to the study, presented here for the first time, the majority of the analyzed posts supported the journalist. However, the remainder were shared and amplified in a manner designed to harass Zamora and his family, portraying him as a criminal, depicting his detention as the result of proven criminal acts, and framing his journalistic work as an illegal activity for which he deserves to be prosecuted and imprisoned."
