"The newsroom at the media outlet Tapajós de Fato spent part of this year defining its coverage agenda and seeking funding to cover the [Brazil's] 2026 elections. But threats and episodes of violence led the site, based in [the city of] Santarém, in western Pará state, to abandon the project before publishing its first report.
Created in 2020 during the wave of pandemic denialism, Tapajós de Fato is an independent news outlet and a member of the InfoAmazonia Citizen Network that has become a reference for journalism in the Amazon, exposing social and environmental violations. But during this year’s campaign, the newsroom will not address the region’s problems, propose solutions or investigate candidates’ ties to illegal mining, agribusiness and major infrastructure projects.
‘When it is better not to speak, for the sake of survival, society is actually the one that loses,' said project coordinator João Paulo Serra, 27."
