“A total of 101 news outlets, organizations, and associations called on Tuesday for guarantees of freedom of expression in Venezuela, following more than 27 years during which, they say there has been censorship, persecution, and restrictions on civic space.
Through the ‘Manifesto for Freedom of Expression in Venezuela,’ 38 news organizations and 63 civil groups demanded the repeal of the legal framework that they consider is used to criminalize dissent, as well as the transformation of the country’s telecommunications regulator, Conatel.
They also requested the full release of individuals detained for expressing their opinions and the ‘lifting of online blocks’ on various websites.
Freedom of expression is among the topics to be addressed in the upcoming round of talks between the governing party and the opposition, expected in the second half of September, according to statements made to EFE by the press team of the head of the opposition delegation, Dinorah Figuera.”
