Ao receber o Grande Pr\u00eamio de Chapultepec 2021<\/a>, o editor Marty Baron reconheceu n\u00e3o apenas seu pr\u00f3prio objetivo de lutar por uma imprensa independente para garantir a democracia, mas as batalhas travadas por seus colegas latino-americanos para fazer o mesmo.<\/p>\n

\u201cEsse tem sido meu objetivo e tenho trabalhado incansavelmente para alcan\u00e7\u00e1-lo<\/a>, mas tamb\u00e9m reconhe\u00e7o que voc\u00ea, que pratica jornalismo na Am\u00e9rica Latina, tem tido um trabalho muito mais \u00e1rduo do que o meu\u201d, disse Baron, ex-editor executivo do The Washington Post. \u201cVoc\u00ea enfrentou obst\u00e1culos maiores e enfrentou muitas amea\u00e7as piores. Voc\u00ea, sua equipe e a pr\u00f3pria exist\u00eancia de suas organiza\u00e7\u00f5es foram colocados em risco. Marty Baron<\/p><\/div>\n

Baron foi o homenageado deste ano com o pr\u00eamio da Sociedade Interamericana de Imprensa (SIP), que reconhece aqueles que defenderam e promoveram a liberdade de express\u00e3o e de imprensa no \u00e2mbito da Declara\u00e7\u00e3o de Chapultepec<\/a>. Adotada em 1994, a declara\u00e7\u00e3o cont\u00e9m dez princ\u00edpios sobre a defesa da liberdade de imprensa.<\/p>\n

Baron recebeu o Grande Pr\u00eamio Chapultepec 2021 como parte da reuni\u00e3o de meio de ano<\/a> da SIP, que ocorre virtualmente neste ano de 20 a 23 de abril e tem participa\u00e7\u00e3o gratuita. Voc\u00ea pode ver o programa da reuni\u00e3o aqui.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ao anunciar o pr\u00eamio em mar\u00e7o, o presidente da SIP, Jorge Canahuati, disse que Baron demonstrou \"lideran\u00e7a e um senso de prop\u00f3sito na busca cont\u00ednua da verdade<\/a> e o consideramos um cl\u00e1ssico universal do jornalismo\".<\/p>\n

Em seu discurso, Baron se lembrou dos \u00faltimos anos trabalhando na reda\u00e7\u00e3o durante a administra\u00e7\u00e3o de Donald Trump, que frequentemente atacava a imprensa como \"fake news\" ou \"inimiga do povo\".<\/p>\n

\u201cAgora sabemos agora que, nos Estados Unidos, a nossa democracia \u00e9 mais fr\u00e1gil do que imagin\u00e1vamos. Tamb\u00e9m sabemos que nossas institui\u00e7\u00f5es n\u00e3o s\u00e3o t\u00e3o fortes quanto pens\u00e1vamos. Reconhecemos o qu\u00e3o vulner\u00e1vel a imprensa independente pode ser quando submetida a ataques implac\u00e1veis \u200b\u200be em grande escala\u201d, disse Baron. \u201cDurante quatro anos tivemos um l\u00edder nos Estados Unidos que nos atacava incessantemente e com ressentimento ilimitado. Ele come\u00e7ou nos marginalizando, depois tentou deslegitimar a gente e depois tentou nos desumanizar. E, finalmente, ele tentou nos desqualificar como \u00e1rbitros confi\u00e1veis \u200b\u200bde informa\u00e7\u00f5es.\u201d<\/p>\n

O veterano jornalista disse que os EUA t\u00eam uma obriga\u00e7\u00e3o com a democracia e consigo mesmos de se manterem firmes em seus princ\u00edpios.<\/p>\n

\u201cTamb\u00e9m devemos isso a todos voc\u00eas que por d\u00e9cadas se mantiveram firmes na defesa dos princ\u00edpios democr\u00e1ticos, incluindo a liberdade de express\u00e3o, e muitas vezes buscando o apoio moral dos Estados Unidos\u201d, disse ele.<\/p>\n

Ele tamb\u00e9m refletiu sobre o ano passado, quando jornalistas trabalharam em meio a uma pandemia global, protestos sociais, polariza\u00e7\u00e3o pol\u00edtica e profunda desconfian\u00e7a em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 imprensa, bem como debates sobre o que constitui fato ou verdade.<\/p>\n

\u201cN\u00e3o \u00e9 hora para sil\u00eancio ou timidez. Este \u00e9 um momento de renovada determina\u00e7\u00e3o de nossa parte. Precisamos nos lembrar do que significa ser um bom jornalista \u201d, disse Baron. \u201cAcredito que ser um bom jornalista exige alma e determina\u00e7\u00e3o. Ter alma implica compreender a miss\u00e3o fundamental do jornalismo que \u00e9 a busca da verdade \u2013 n\u00e3o apenas entend\u00ea-la, mas tamb\u00e9m sentir um profundo compromisso em descobri-la. E tenacidade, porque exige que tenhamos for\u00e7a de vontade para resistir aos ataques mais implac\u00e1veis\u201d<\/p>\n

Baron disse que embora ele n\u00e3o esteja mais no The Post, ele \"n\u00e3o se aposentou do jornalismo\".<\/p>\n

No futuro, ele pretende ajudar o p\u00fablico a entender o trabalho da imprensa, e a imprensa a entender as pessoas. Ele tamb\u00e9m prometeu apoiar seus colegas.<\/p>\n

\u201cEspero continuar sendo uma voz pelo trabalho que todos voc\u00eas realizam sob imensa press\u00e3o e grande risco\u201d, disse o jornalista.<\/p>\n

Antes de ingressar no The Post em 2013, Baron foi editor do The Boston Globe e tamb\u00e9m ocupou cargos importantes de edi\u00e7\u00e3o no The New York Times, Los Angeles Times e Miami Herald.
