“Guatemalan journalists Marvin Del Cid and Sonny Figueroa have been the subjects of harassment in recent weeks, the organization Artículo 19 reported. The attacks intensified after the Del Cid and Figueroa published an article about media outlets spreading disinformation in Guatemala. They also escalated following the release of a video showing someone photographing the two journalists, with those photos later used to discredit them and shared on social media without their consent.
‘We have documented intensifying harassment and smear campaigns targeting Vox Populi journalists. Of particular concern is that well-known accounts, such as NetCenters, which systematically attack journalists, continue to perpetuate aggression against the press, further worsening the already hostile environment in which journalism is conducted in Guatemala,’ an Artículo 19 statement said.”
