About Us

Welcome to the LatAm Journalism Review, a trilingual digital magazine published by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin’s Moody College of Communication.

The Knight Center is an outreach program created in 2002 by professor Rosental Calmon Alves, Knight Chair in Journalism and UNESCO Chair in Communication at the Moody College of Communication School of Journalism.

The original goal of the Knight Center was to help journalists in Latin American and the Caribbean with professional training and capacity building, but in recent years it has become a global operation thanks to massive online courses that have reached students in 200 countries and territories.

Since 2003, the Knight Center has also offered an editorial product that has become a publication of record of issues related to journalism and press freedom in Latin America and the Caribbean. For 17 years, the Knight Center has published the blog Journalism in the Americas that in June 2020 grew into this digital magazine.

A team of journalists based in the United States and Latin America continue to write stories in English, Spanish and Portuguese, but LJR prioritizes in-depth articles and features instead of hard news that was the main focus of the blog.

However, in the News Monitor section, LJR readers can find a compilation of headlines of the most important news related to journalism and press freedom published by news organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean. The headlines and summaries are carefully translated by our team to be offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese, along with the respective link to the original source.

Our team also produces a weekly newsletter that summarizes the original articles from LatAm Journalism Review and the main headlines of the week about journalism and press freedom issues in the region.

The Knight Center is dedicated to the mission of sharing knowledge and fostering capacity building among journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean and around the world, through this digital magazine and its online courses and conferences, like the International Symposium on Online Journalism and the Iberian Colloquium on Digital Journalism.

We believe that free and independent journalism is one of the pillars of a democratic society. We hope that our work contributes to equip journalists with more knowledge and tools to fulfill their civic roles to better inform and engage the communities they serve.
