Bolivia marks 100 years of Printing Press Law as a pillar of free speech

“Bolivia commemorates this Sunday [January 19] the centennial of its Printing Press Law, which has endured the country’s political transformations, is considered one of the oldest in the region, and serves as a tool to protect freedom of expression for citizens and journalists.

The president of the National Association of Journalists of Bolivia (ANPB for its initials in Spanish), Zulema Alanes, told EFE that the law ‘has been declared a legal heritage of Bolivian journalism’ because it ‘has safeguarded journalistic activity despite its limitations.’

Alanes said the principles outlined in the law, which have stood the test of time, include ‘the prohibition of prior censorship, the prohibition of media closures, and the establishment of special courts to try press-related offenses.’ ”
