Peruvian police detain journalist who was reporting on traffic jam

While reporting on a traffic jam in a sector of the city of Chiclayo, Peru, Fátima Constantino, a journalist for the media outlet Exitosa, was detained by members of the National Police on the morning of Jan. 28.

According to local media, an agent approached her, called her out for recording and asked her to identify herself. Although she showed her journalist credentials, the agent called for backup, the outlet reported. Five more police officers arrived and forced her into the police vehicle, accusing her of disobeying authority and not showing her identification.

The National Association of Journalists (ANP, for its initials in Spanish) of Peru denounced the case as an abuse of authority and described the operation as “disproportionate.”
