Venezuelan journalist released after August 2024 protest arrest

The National Union of Press Workers in Venezuela confirmed that journalist Eleangel Navas Vidal, who was detained during post-election protests in August 2024, has been released.

The union announced on Feb. 26 that Navas Vidal was freed in late January, but the news was not made public until nearly a month later because his family chose not to disclose details about the conditions of his release.

Navas Vidal, a 25-year-old community manager at a regional media outlet, was arrested on Aug. 3 by officers from the Penal Investigations Division of the Bolivarian National Police, according to Attorney General Tarek William Saab.

On the night of Aug. 7, a national prosecutor charged him with terrorism and incitement to hatred over violent incidents that took place on July 29 in El Tigre, the capital of Simón Rodríguez municipality.
