Community radio association condemns .ni domain block, calls it ‘consolidation of digital censorship’ in Nicaragua

“The World Association of Community Radios in Latin America and the Caribbean strongly condemns the latest attack on freedom of expression in Nicaragua, carried out through the blocking of .ni web domains. This action affects independent media and restricts public access to information.

Since its founding, the community radio association has defended the fundamental right to freedom of expression, media plurality, and community broadcasting as pillars of democracy and social justice. The recent decision by the government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to restrict access to independent media websites is a serious violation of these principles, further entrenching digital censorship and misinformation.

Given that the administration of .ni domains is currently in the hands of the National University of Engineering (UNI), we urge the authorities of this institution and responsible entities in Nicaragua to reverse this decision and guarantee the public’s right to access diverse and reliable sources of information.”
