Several national and international organizations, as well as journalists and individuals known for their defense of the freedom of expression, have expressed solidarity and condemnation of a systematic campaign of attacks and threats against the journalists of Prensa Comunitaria and cofounder Nelton Rivera. The attacks have primarily occurred on social media and represent an attempt to criminalize their work in independent journalism and the exposure of corruption in Guatemala.
In recent weeks, a campaign of cyberattacks has been identified, carried out by botnets and accounts linked to groups accused of corruption that operate from within the state. These accounts are also characterized by accessing confidential information from the Public Ministry, which is then leaked as part of a strategy of persecution and intimidation against those exercising the right to inform.
