Haitian journalist injured in gang attack is stranded in Cuba without support

"SOS Journalistes strongly condemns the Haitian government's irresponsible decision to abandon a seriously injured journalist who is in Cuba receiving necessary medical care.

The journalist is Jocelyn Justin, whose lower jaw was shattered by bullets fired by gangs during violent incidents on December 24, 2024, near the General Hospital. The attack left three people dead — including two journalists — and around ten others wounded.

At one point, there was debate over whether the journalist should remain in Cuba or return to Haiti while awaiting facial reconstruction surgery scheduled for the coming months. It was ultimately agreed he would stay in Cuba under the responsibility of Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP).

However, SOS Journalistes expressed disappointment that the government failed to uphold its commitment. The journalist is now in a desperate situation in Cuba, receiving no support and unable to afford housing, food, or prescribed medication."
