“The right-wing party Patria Libre called for a peaceful protest in front of the National Congress in response to a bill submitted by the Executive Branch to the Senate aimed at regulating freedom of expression and digital media.
This new bill adds to a series of similar initiatives that have raised concerns in Dominican society in recent years, including the controversial National Department of Investigations bill and other legislative proposals that sought to regulate digital content, punish criticism, and limit speech.
Patria Libre warns that this type of legislation not only seeks to silence alternative and independent media, but also sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the right to free and truthful information, promotes a climate of self-censorship and ideological persecution, and puts democracy itself at risk.”
