Journalist in Veracruz, Mexico, says mayor threatened him following news report

“The director of news portal Portavoz MX, Andrés Pérez Mendiola, requested the intervention of the State Commission for the Protection and Attention of Journalists (CEAPP, by its Spanish acronym) after allegedly suffering a threat from the mayor of the municipality of Cazones [in the Mexican state of Veracruz], Miguel Ángel Uribe Toral, related to Pérez Mendiola's journalistic work.

According to the journalist, he published a news report yesterday, June 6, about the dismissal of approximately six employees of the Cazones City Hall, in the north of the state. However, he said that about 15 minutes later, the mayor called him to complain and said: 'I hope nothing happens to you' [...].

[...]

Subsequently, the journalist said that he began to receive a series of anonymous messages through social media and that for this reason he decided to ask for support from CEAPP. [...] The CEAPP issued an statement last night urging the mayor of Cazones, Miguel Ángel Uribe Toral, to guarantee the free exercise of freedom of expression.”
