Journalist faces sexual violence threats after story on Brazil’s upcoming election

“Journalist Sílvia Tereza reported on Thursday, June 12, that she was the target of threats, including suggestions of sexual violence, after publishing an article about the 2026 political landscape. In a video posted on social media, she said the comments were made on her blog and Instagram profile, using offensive and threatening language.

According to Tereza, the comments carried an intimidating tone and were followed by anonymous messages traced to specific IP addresses. She filed a police report at the 4th Police Precinct in Vinhais, in São Luís, Maranhão, where she also submitted evidence.

The Maranhão Journalists’ Union and the National Federation of Journalists issued a statement condemning the threats, calling the attack sexist and unacceptable.”
