Police officer assaults journalist in Mexico, investigation underway

“Martín Martínez, a reporter for the El Sol de Irapuato newspaper, was assaulted by a local police officer while covering a police incident in the El Cantador neighborhood. Part of the incident was caught on video by nearby residents and shared on social media.

Witnesses said they heard the officer tell Martínez to ‘get the hell out of here’ even though the reporter was documenting the scene from a safe distance and was not obstructing emergency personnel or their work. The officer then approached Martínez, shouted insults, pushed him, and—after the reporter had moved farther away—struck him in the groin. The officer later denied the assault and told Martínez, ‘Don’t be so dramatic.’

Irapuato Mayor Lorena Alfaro García said on social media that she had ordered an investigation into the incident. The Guanajuato State Human Rights Ombudsperson’s Office also contacted Martínez to offer support and said it would open an official inquiry into the case.”
