"The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES for its initials in Spanish) announced Tuesday [Sept. 16] that it will stop carrying out projects funded by international cooperation and close its offices indefinitely, citing what it called the “suffocating, arbitrary and illegal conditions” imposed by the Foreign Agents Law promoted by President Nayib Bukele’s government.
It is the fourth nongovernmental organization to shut down operations in El Salvador after the country’s leading human rights group, Cristosal, said in July that it was leaving amid growing harassment and legal threats from the government.
In a statement, APES said it has suspended, liquidated and closed all projects funded from abroad and 'closed our offices until further notice.' Still, the group said it will continue to provide services for registering and reporting attacks and violations against the press and will keep 'defending the rights to freedom of the press of Salvadoran colleagues.' "
