"The National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP, by its acronym in Spanish) strongly condemns the sustained institutional hostility of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) against journalist Karla Ramírez, head of investigations for the Sunday TV program ‘Panorama,’ and her press team.
In a particularly serious case, the PNP has announced in a public statement that it is initiating criminal proceedings against Ramírez in a clear attempt to criminalize journalistic practice. As part of an investigative report, the journalist made calls to police officers and senior police officials in order to gather their statements, a legitimate and essential practice of good journalism. However, these efforts have been distorted by the police and presented as alleged acts of ‘harassment.’ The police statement even alludes to ‘slander and defamation,’ after an obvious refusal to provide their version in the report.
[...]
The ANP recalls that the journalist had previously reported the existence of an internal PNP plan to attack her integrity or that of her family, without receiving a coherent response from this institution, which should investigate such a serious allegation."
