Journalists attacked by demonstrators and law enforcement while covering protests in Ecuador

"The protests that began on Sept. 22 in Ecuador have already led to 143 cases of human rights violations, 63 arrests, 92 injuries, 11 people 'temporarily missing"—including one previously detained by police—and one dead: Efraín Fuerez, the 46-year-old Indigenous leader recognized for his work in Mingas, who was shot by a group of soldiers quelling the demonstrations in the Imbabura region.

Some journalists covering the protests have reported attacks by both demonstrators and law enforcement: the former have hurled insults, thrown sticks, and stones at them; the latter have used tear gas and indiscriminate repression in areas where they cover the protests, according to journalistic associations.

The organization Fundamedios, founded in 2007 to protect freedom of expression and the press, has reported 'arbitrary arrests,' the throwing of objects, insults, and even suspension of broadcasts by local Indigenous media outlets."
