"Since 2022, Nicaragua has become a hub for the expansion of Russian propaganda. The government of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo have bolstered the spread of the Kremlin’s narrative abroad by allowing Russian state media to insert their content and production methods into Nicaraguan state outlets. Reporters Without Borders (RSF, for its acronym in French) warns of the dangers of this partnership, which forces authoritarian propaganda on a population of 7 million people deprived of other sources of information.
For the past three years, the Nicaraguan government has been fostering a structured propaganda network through a collaboration between two Russian state media, RT in Spanish and Sputnik, and multiple Nicaraguan outlets, all of which are state-controlled as the vast majority of independent outlets in the country have been shut down, confiscated or forced into exile. The dominant sources of information available to Nicaraguans, these national state outlets now relay the narratives of two authoritarian regimes, boosting the unchecked dissemination of Russian propaganda while continuing to amplify the rhetoric of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo."
