'Freedoms of the press and expression are facing unprecedented threats in our history,' IAPA President

"The president of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), José Roberto Dutriz Fogelbach, warned this Thursday [Oct. 16] at the 81st IAPA General Assembly in the Dominican Republic that press freedom and freedom of expression are currently going through a dark period unprecedented in modern times.

'We come to this commitment with a reality that challenges us forcefully: freedom of the press and freedom of expression, which are going through a period of threats and challenges unprecedented in our recent history, as serious as they are diverse across the continent, and as relevant today, this day, and as they have been throughout this week and the past few months,' said the CEO of Grupo LPG in his opening remarks.

Dutriz noted that over the past six months, the IAPA has found that journalism is facing a bleak outlook, characterized by a marked deterioration in the working conditions of journalists and the media."
