Fake exit polls and disinformation spread after Honduras’ presidential election

“At about 11 a.m., a series of alleged exit polls began circulating on social media. Those favoring the ruling party candidate, Rixi Moncada, originated mainly from anonymous accounts but were amplified by pro-government media and by current government officials.

Asked about these posts, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Octavio Pineda said he was unaware of them and denied they came from the Liberty and Refoundation Party. He also said no government officials were sharing them.

Exit polls favoring other candidates are also circulating on WhatsApp chats and social networks. These include a fake poll attributed to CID Gallup — which the firm has not posted on any of its official channels — that favors ruling-party candidate Rixi Moncada, and ‘projections’ shared by supposed outlets such as ‘Diario Digital El Pueblo,’ which support candidate Salvador Nasralla, as well as others in favor of Nasry Asfura, such as Métrica Encuestas.

In response, National Electoral Council (CNE) President Ana Paola Hall warned on social media that media outlets publishing alleged exit polls and triumphalist statements ‘are violating the Electoral Law.’ ”
