ARTICLE 19 Mexico and Central America expressed its concern over threats of legal action against Honduran journalist Helen Montoya Aguilera, of the news outlet Reportar Sin Miedo (Report Without Fear), following the publication of an investigation into alleged nepotism and conflicts of interest linked to the political circle of Honduran President Nasry “Tito” Asfura.
The controversy arose because the report included a table, provided by sources, with the names of two minors. Montoya issued a public apology and clarified that her objective was to publish information of public interest. However, state entities announced investigations, and political actors demanded that the journalist reveal her sources.
Montoya also denounced threats and stigmatization campaigns on social media. ARTICLE 19 reiterated that the Honduran Constitution prohibits censorship and protects freedom of expression, and emphasized that the confidentiality of journalistic sources is an essential principle recognized by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
