Venezuela press union calls for amnesty law to recognize persecution of journalists

“The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) of Venezuela requested Monday that a pending amnesty law recognize the persecution of journalists and demanded an 'express' commitment from the state to ‘never again’ use criminal law against the practice of journalism. Parliament is expected to approve the law this week.

At a press conference, SNTP General Secretary Marco Ruiz explained that 59 journalists in Venezuela are facing legal proceedings. Of those, four remain behind bars, two are under house arrest, and at least 20 are in exile ‘as a direct consequence of persecution.’ ”
