Advocates call on Brazilian government to implement protective measures for journalists in the Amazon

"During a hearing held in early March, within the framework of the 195th session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in Guatemala City, Reporters Without Borders (RSF, for its Portuguese initials) and partner organizations had the opportunity to press Brazilian authorities: it has become urgent to effectively implement the precautionary and protective measures granted by the IACHR following the murders of independent British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous rights expert Bruno Pereira in 2022.

The effective implementation of these measures must lead not only to the accountability and punishment of the murderers of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira, but also to structural guarantees of protection and an end to violence in the [Amazon] region. RSF has been documenting the security risks that continue to weigh upon information professionals in the Amazon, particularly women journalists."
