“Sixty-one media outlets shut down, media professionals imprisoned, more than 300 journalists in exile and 65% of Nicaragua’s territory turned into a news desert. After nearly two decades in power, the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has successfully carried out a sustained strategy to dismantle independent journalism. Meanwhile, Nicaraguan journalists continue to work in exile, many stripped of their nationality, as they strive to act as a counterbalance to the regime.

A report produced by the network of Nicaraguan journalists ‘Las Exiliadas Nicas,’ with support from Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Spain, documents how the regime has carried out a 20-year strategy to progressively eradicate independent journalism as a democratic actor.
The report was presented Monday, April 13, at an event opened by Mónica Tourón, secretary-general of the Asociación de la Prensa de Madrid, or APM, and coordinated by RSF Spain Vice President Edith Rodríguez Cachera. Independent journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, founder of the storied investigative outlet Confidencial, was the featured speaker at the event, held at APM headquarters.”
