Each year, journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean take advantage of fellowship opportunities in the U.S. to explore independent reporting projects, research ideas or tackle big problems in the industry.
They are among the fellows spending weeks, months or an academic year at higher education institutions across the country.
We’ve compiled a list of well-known fellowships open to journalists around the world, and some in particular meant for Latin American professionals. They are ordered by application deadline, nearest first. More fellowships will be added as application dates are announced.

Cabot Fellowships to the Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program
News and media managers in Latin America and the Carribean are invited to apply for this 16-week fellowship to work on media-specific problems. They will learn “design thinking and core business concepts that help determine a project’s feasibility, viability and desirability.” The fellowship takes place at Columbia University in New York City and also at the fellows’ workplace. The application deadline is Nov. 4, 2019.
For two semesters, fellows audit classes at Harvard University, MIT and Tufts, while also participating in program events and collaborating with peers. This fellowship is open to journalists working in print, broadcast, digital and audiovisual media. International Nieman Fellowship application (for non-U.S. citizens) deadline is Dec. 1, 2019 and the U.S. Nieman Fellowship application (for U.S. citizens) deadline is Jan. 31, 2020.
Fellows spend an academic year at the University of Michigan to study and participate in seminars and workshops, “to deepen knowledge, develop new ideas, learn new skills and address challenges facing the journalism industry.” The international application deadline is Dec. 1, 2019 and the U.S. application deadline is Feb. 1, 2020.
Knight Science Journalism Program
For nine months, science journalists will explore science, technology and the craft of journalism at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and other institutions in Cambridge, Massachusetts and greater Boston. Fellows will also participate in seminars, master classes, workshops and publications. Applications are open from Nov. 15, 2019 to Jan. 15, 2020.
Kiplinger Fellowship in Digital Media
As part of this fellowship, participants usually spend a week on the campus of Ohio State University for “cutting-edge training on digital tools and tactics from leading industry experts.” Applications are due Dec. 1, 2019.
John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford
Fellows work on a project that addresses one of the “most urgent problems facing journalism.” This includes misinformation and disinformation, accountability, news deserts and local news and the fight against bias, intolerance and injustice. Fellows will have access to classes at Stanford University. Applications for international fellowships are due Dec. 4, 2019. The deadline for U.S. applications is Jan. 30, 2020.
Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism
During this yearlong program, fellows will take courses at the Columbia Journalism School, as well as the schools of business, law and international affairs. They will also attend seminars with media, corporate and tech practitioners, and meet with media CEOs, editors and journalism entrepreneurs. Editorial employees of newspapers, magazines, wire services, digital media, television and radio news organizations, as well as freelancers, should apply. Apply before Jan. 31, 2020.
