In Colombia, the House approves article that would restrict work of the press regarding officials

"With 67 votes against and 51 votes in favor, the House defended an article that could result in the restriction of journalistic work and in the control of the actions of public officials. The controversial point is in the project that seeks to 'adopt measures in matters of transparency, prevention and fight against corruption.'

The controversial article, which was supported by the majority of the representatives, establishes an addition to the penal code to establish injuria (defamation) and calumnia against officials and former public officials. According to the text, defended by the ruling party, penalties of 60 to 120 months in prison are created for those who 'by duly proven injuria or calumnia intend to attack or obstruct the constitutional and legal functions of a public official."
