News outlet ‘Divergentes’, from Nicaragua, and Mexican photographer Sáshenka Gutiérrez are among winners of the Ortega y Gasset awards

"The jury of the 39th edition of the Ortega y Gasset Journalism Awards, met this Wednesday, April 6, at the headquarters of EL PAÍS in Madrid, and announced the winners.

In the category of Best Multimedia Coverage, the special 'The challenge behind the massacre: Memory, truth, justice, and non-repetition,' published by the Nicaraguan media outlet Divergentes, was acclaimed. It analyzes the situation of repression that exists in Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega's regime.

The award for Best Photography went to the Mexican journalist Sáshenka Gutiérrez, from the Efe agency, for an image taken of Sandra Monroy, a cancer patient who underwent a bilateral mastectomy that saved her life. The jury highlighted that the image, published in various media, 'captures a moment of maximum pain, in which the wound is still recent but still manages to convey hope.' For the jury, the value of this photograph lies 'in the unusual portrayal of raw intimacy, which affects many women around the world.'"
