"Brazil is the third country that, between 2011 and 2021, had one of the highest declines in freedom of expression indicators, according to the Global Expression Report annual report by ARTICLE 19, a non-governmental organization for the defense and promotion of the right to freedom of expression and access to information worldwide, released this Thurs. June 30th. Behind only Hong Kong and Afghanistan, the country had a reduction of 38 points in the scale of the global ranking of freedom of expression produced annually by the institution, which gathers information from 161 countries according to 25 indicators.
The data in the document show that from 2015 to 2021, the country fell 58 positions in the global ranking of freedom of expression, reaching 50 points and the 89th position, its worst record since the survey began in 2010. "We went from a nation considered open to restricted in a very short time. This data is one of the most shocking in the whole world, not only for the fall itself, but for having occurred in a more accentuated manner under the leadership of a president who was elected, and who should cherish democracy and freedom of expression, which is not the case, as shown in the Report," Denise Dora, executive director of ARTIGO 19, said.
