Businessman convicted of murder of Brazilian journalist Valério Luiz must financially compensate widow

“Maurício Sampaio has been ordered to pay more than 700,000 reais [US$126,000] to the widow of Brazilian broadcaster Valério Luiz. The businessman was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the journalist's murder.

In her lawsuit, Valério Luiz's widow, Lorena Nascimento e Silva de Oliveira, claimed that she and the radio broadcaster had been married since July 28, 2005, and that he was responsible for the household expenses. She explained that she had had to pay for her husband's funeral, as well as the rent and condominium fees of the house where they lived.

The case has been open since 2012, when Valério Luiz was murdered as he left the radio station where he worked, in the Serrinha neighborhood, in Goiânia [Brazil]. The motive for the murder was allegedly the journalist's criticism of the management of Atlético-GO, the team of which Sampaio was president.”
