A court in Bogotá “has convicted José Miguel Narváez, former deputy director of the Administrative Department of Security (DAS), for the crime against humanity of aggravated and continuous torture suffered by journalist Claudia Julieta Duque. Narváez is the seventh person to be convicted in this case and has been identified by Duque as one of the top perpetrators and the most significant figure within the criminal apparatus that operated within the DAS.

In a hearing April this year, Narváez denied his responsibility as the main suspect in the crime and further victimized Duque by questioning whether she had been psychologically tortured. Four months later, he has been confirmed as the principal author of a strategy involving illegal interceptions, surveillance, and psychological torture against Duque, who at the time was investigating the alleged involvement of DAS in the murder of journalist and humorist Jaime Garzón, which occurred on August 13, 1999. These reprisals forced Duque into exile and had severe significant on her life."
