“The cassation (appeal) hearing for the case of Jose Rubén Zamora was postponed to Sept. 23, 2025 by the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. Until that date, the resolution of an Appeals Chamber that annulled the conviction against Zamora, due to allegations of money laundering presented by the public prosecutor's office, would remain final.
The journalist had been sentenced to six years in prison, but an Appeals Chamber ordered the judicial process to be repeated due to irregularities in the case. Zamora was arrested on July 29, 2022, after having published in the newspaper he presided over, elPeriódico, criticism against the government of Alejandro Giammattei. Since then, Zamora, his family and his defense team have denounced delays that they consider malicious and that have hindered the resolution of the case.”
