Violations to the right to information in Costa Rica reach record high in 2024, analysis reveals

“Violations to the right to information [in Costa Rica] reached a record high this year, according to an analysis of the statistics registry of the Supreme Court's Constitutional Chamber carried out by La Nación newspaper. So far in 2024, in 459 appeal cases, magistrates have ruled in favor of citizens to whom institutions have refused to provide data of public interest.

Rulings related to access to information registered the second highest percentage growth this year compared to the previous year, with an increase of 56%, surpassing increases in areas such as health and labor.

The figures are much higher than the 294 appeals endorsed last year. In 2022, the number was 425, while at the beginning of this decade, in 2020, there were only 49 rulings.”
