Colombian senator accused of stigmatizing journalist

“Reporter Diana Saray Giraldo has been the target of stigmatizing remarks since Jan. 9 by Senator Sandra Ramírez, a member of the Comunes party [composed of former FARC guerrilla combatants]. The controversy arose after Giraldo shared a post on the social media platform X about the senator’s participation in an event in Venezuela. In her statements, the senator accused Giraldo of profiling her and held her responsible for any potential harm that might befall her. These remarks have triggered hostile and misogynistic attacks from other users on social media.

The senator in her post criticized Giraldo’s response to her participation in the World Anti-Fascist Festival in Venezuela, calling her comments ‘irresponsible, biased, and dangerous.’ She also asked, ‘What is the relevant information being conveyed in her post, or what is the message of national interest? That I’m in Venezuela?’ Such statements divert attention from legitimate public debate and foster a hostile environment toward the journalist. In another post, she added: ‘Such recklessness and danger! @FiscaliaCol, I am putting this on record in case anything happens to me.’ ”
