Media outlets from Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Colombia won at the 2019 Digital Media LATAM Awards given by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Rio de Janeiro on Nov. 12.
The awards "recognize news media companies and entitites affiliated with the news media industry within the region which have adopted digital media and mobile strategies as part of their total product offering to meet the major changes in how people consume news and information today."
Newspaper La Nación of Argentina was the media company with the most winnings at four prizes, including the Jury Prize for Best Digital Journalism Project for their series “Los cuadernos de las coimas” (The bribery notebooks). The project, which details alleged government corruption, allows readers to virtually search through the notebooks at the heart of the political scandal.
“Impressive presentation and the search element for the audience makes it easier and interactive. It’s a great example of investigative journalism, put at the audience’s disposal,” said jury member Selymar Colón, according to WAN-IFRA.
The awards were given during the 2019 Digital Media LATAM Conference held in Rio de Janeiro from Nov. 11 to 13.
For this fifth edition of the awards, the WAN-IFRA received 120 projects from 45 companies in 12 countries.
WAN-IFRA represents more than 3,000 companies in 120 countries and its mission is to “defend and promote press freedom quality journalism and editorial integrity, also promoting business success.” Its Americas office is located in Mexico City.
Winners of the Latin American edition of these awards will go on to face winners from Africa, Asia, South Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America at the World Digital Media Awards 2020 held during the World News Media Congress in Zaragoza, Spain in June 2020.
