The Knight Center’s 17-year-old trilingual blog and weekly newsletter will enter a brief recess in anticipation of its return in a new format – a stand-alone publication called LatAm Journalism Review, with improved, enhanced and innovative coverage of journalism and press freedom issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.
As the Knight Center’s team enters the final stages of preparation of LJR’s website, we will stop the publication of new blog posts. However, we will keep up with news about journalism and media in Latin America and the Caribbean via Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.
Unlike the blog, the trilingual LatAm Journalism Review will live on a site independent from the Knight Center’s institutional presence online. The same team of journalists based in the U.S. and Latin America will work on in-depth pieces that focus on issues of press freedom, innovation, business models, sustainability and more. We will also count on more collaborators to better help us cover the region. Breaking news events will now be covered by way of a News Monitor that lives on the site.
The Journalism in the Americas blog launched in 2003 and publishes in English, Spanish and Portuguese. At times it has served as a simple monitor of press freedom in the entire American continent, and at others it has focused solely on Central and South America with more original reporting. The blog has produced ebooks in the three languages, most recently on innovations and innovators in Latin American journalism.
“For almost two decades, the blog Journalism in the Americas has been a sort of publication of the record for issues affecting journalism and press freedom in Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s time to give it an upgrade, turning it into a digital magazine with a much better design, usability and new features,” said professor Rosental Calmon Alves, the Knight Center’s founder and director.
“We are very excited at the Knight Center about the launch of LatAm Journalism Review. We thank our loyal readers and subscribers for their patience while we finalize the last details before launching our brand new digital magazine, expected to be on air in June,” Alves said.
