Renowned Mexican reporters Marcela Turati and Javier Valdez, as well as Chilean narrative journalist Cristian Alarcón, will discuss on Feb. 28 their work and the need to forge a bridge between journalists and academics during a forum hosted at the University of Texas at Austin.
The forum in Spanish, “The new long-form journalism in Latin America: A Dialogue between Academics and Journalists,” will seek to have people from both areas exchange ideas about the new manifestations of violence in the continent.
The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, UT Austin's Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will host the event. Click here for more details.
Turati is the co-founder of the journalism organization Periodistas de a Pie and an award-winning reporter with news weekly Proceso. Cristian Alarcón is the editor of Revista Anfibia, an online publication that aims to mix academic research with long-form journalism. Javier Valdez is the co-founder of weekly newspaper Rio Doce, which received the Maria Moors Cabot award in 2011 for its coverage of the violent Mexican state of Sinaloa.
