Journalist in Paraguay accuses senator of making death threats

Paraguayan journalist said he received a death threat from Senator Robert Acevedo, reported the newspaper ABC Color on Friday, March 2. The senator denied the accusations, saying that it was an attempt to cause him political harm, added ABC Color.

Journalist Aníbal Gómez Caballero, who works for the radio station Oasis in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero in Amambay, Paraguay, said that he was threatened by the senator as a consequence of an interview that the journalist conducted via radio with the wife of José Carlos Acevedo, mayor of the city and brother of the senator, reported the newspaper La Nación. During the interview, the woman said that her husband was being unfaithful to her.

The Journalists Union of Paraguay (SPP in Spanish) condemned the threat and called on authorities to investigate the matter and assure the safety of Gómez Caballero.

This is the second death threat recorded in Paraguay this year, SPP said. In January, the journalist Cándido Figueredo received a death threat from a drug trafficker for reporting on drug trafficking in the region.
